About Wassily Kandinsky
Russian-born, active in Germany and France · 1866–1944
Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and initially studied law and economics. He moved to Munich in 1896 to pursue art. Painting, teaching and theoretical writing developed together in his career, giving him several ways to explore what colour and form could express.
Kandinsky helped establish Der Blaue Reiter in Munich with Franz Marc in 1911. He returned to Russia during the First World War and later taught at the Bauhaus in Germany. Across these changing settings, his work developed increasingly independent arrangements of coloured forms, geometric structures and expressive marks.
