About Edvard Munch
Norwegian · 1863–1944
Edvard Munch was born in Norway in 1863. Childhood illness interrupted his schooling, while drawing became a lasting interest. He decided to become a painter as a teenager and began exhibiting in the 1880s. A scholarship enabled a first visit to Paris in 1885, opening his experience beyond Norway.
Munch worked across painting, printmaking, drawing and other media for more than sixty years. His art belonged to Symbolism in the 1890s and helped establish Expressionism in the following century. An exhibition in Berlin in 1892 brought his work into a wider European conversation. Repeated subjects became opportunities for experiment.
