About Vilhelm Hammershøi
Danish · 1864–1916
Vilhelm Hammershøi was born in Copenhagen in 1864. His interiors often return to the places in which he lived, including the apartment at Strandgade 30 that he shared with his wife, Ida. Doors, windows and plain walls become major elements of these carefully arranged pictures.
Hammershøi’s painting is associated with restrained colour and an exacting interest in light. His figures are often quiet within the surrounding architecture, and Ida appears in a number of his interiors. The room itself remains an active subject: sunlight, shade and the meeting of surfaces shape its presence.
