About the artwork

Painted outdoors in Saint-Rémy in the summer of 1889, this landscape brings together the subjects that fascinated Van Gogh: golden wheat, olive trees and the dark, rising forms of cypresses.

Thick brushstrokes give the sky and field a sense of movement. Van Gogh valued this summer landscape so much that he returned to the composition in two later studio paintings.

About Vincent van Gogh

Dutch · 1853–1890

Vincent van Gogh made colour and brushwork a way of expressing how the world felt. Largely self-taught, the Dutch painter developed his art through close observation, drawing and a restless willingness to experiment.

In Paris, the work of the Impressionists encouraged a brighter palette and more distinct strokes. In the south of France, those discoveries became the animated landscapes and expressive portraits that define his work. Our first collection brings together a Paris self-portrait and a summer landscape from Saint-Rémy.
