About Rembrandt van Rijn
Dutch · 1606–1669
Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker who worked first in Leiden and later in Amsterdam. His art grew from close observation of people, and from an extraordinary sensitivity to light and shadow.
Portraits, biblical scenes and self-portraits became ways to explore human experience. His later paintings often have a more contemplative mood, with richly worked surfaces and warm light. Aristotle with a Bust of Homer brings that approach to a quiet encounter between a philosopher and a poet.
