About Joaquín Sorolla
Spanish · 1863–1923
Joaquín Sorolla was born in Valencia in 1863. Orphaned as a young child, he was raised by an aunt and her husband, and his artistic ability became apparent early. Study in Valencia led to exhibitions in Madrid. In 1884, before he was twenty-one, the Spanish government acquired his first large history painting, marking the beginning of a career that would reach an international audience.
Sorolla married Clotilde García del Castillo in 1888, and they settled in Madrid in 1890. His wife and their three children became recurring subjects. Valencia continued to draw him back, especially its coast and intense sunlight. Beach paintings made outdoors helped establish his reputation, while portraits and pictures of Spanish life extended the range of an artist celebrated for energetic brushwork and a vivid sense of atmosphere.
