About Samuel Palmer

Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) was an English artist. Palmer's career encompassed original prints as well as paintings and drawings. His rural subjects belong to the Romantic interest in landscape as an imaginative experience, extending beyond the record of a particular place. Christmas offers a small seasonal encounter with that larger world. The presence of people within the landscape connects work, weather and community; the scene can be read both as a gathering of recognisable details and as an overall pattern of light.
