About Raphael
Italian · 1483–1520
Raphael was born in Urbino in 1483. His father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter connected to the court, giving him an early setting rich in art and literature. Major commissions arrived while Raphael was still young. A move to Florence around 1504 brought him into close study of Leonardo and Michelangelo.
Raphael’s developing reputation led to ambitious work for successive popes in Rome. His practice extended beyond painting into architecture and designs for other media. The School of Athens brings many figures together in an imposing architectural setting, showing how an expansive arrangement can retain a strong, readable centre.
