About Michelangelo
Italian · 1475–1564
Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in Caprese in 1475. He received early training as a painter in Domenico Ghirlandaio’s Florentine workshop and became celebrated as a sculptor, painter, architect and draughtsman. Drawing and design remained closely connected throughout his work, allowing a figure or a larger arrangement to be explored on paper.
Michelangelo’s work for the Sistine Chapel brought his understanding of the figure into a vast painted programme. Preparatory drawings reveal the close study behind those monumental images. In The Creation of Adam, two principal groups are separated by an open interval, making their reaching hands an exceptionally clear meeting point.
