About Perugino

Italian · 1445/46–1523

Perugino (1445/46–1523) was an Italian artist. The artist's working name refers to Perugia, one of the centres of his career. His workshops also operated in Florence, linking his practice with two important artistic communities. Religious commissions required him to organise groups of figures so that their relationships were immediately clear. The Nativity gives a useful entry into that concern: its different figures have individual roles, yet their placement draws them into a single, measured scene.
