About Henri Matisse
French · 1869–1954
Henri Matisse was born in northern France in 1869. Initially trained for a legal career, he turned toward art in his early twenties. Painting became the centre of a long and varied practice that also included drawing, sculpture, printmaking, book illustration and, later, paper cut-outs.
Matisse was a leading figure in Fauvism, the movement associated with intense colour in the early twentieth century. The Green Stripe and The Joy of Life belong to this important period. He continued developing his art over subsequent decades, repeatedly finding new means for closely related visual questions.
