About Gerard David

Netherlandish · 1450/60–1523

Gerard David (1450/60–1523) was a Netherlandish artist. Bruges was a major centre of painting and manuscript production during David's career. His practice developed within that environment of skilled workshops and devotional commissions. He also joined the Antwerp painters' guild in 1515, extending his professional connections beyond Bruges. The Nativity offers a concentrated encounter with his art: close observation of small objects and faces accompanies a larger concern with the calm organisation of the scene and the relationships between its participants.
