About George Cruikshank
English · 1792–1878
George Cruikshank (1792–1878) was an English artist. Cruikshank became widely known through caricature and book illustration. His work for books by Charles Dickens helped bring his images to an international readership. The capacity to make a story visible through gesture is equally useful in a crowded street print. Christmas Bustle invites the viewer to follow many small incidents, rather than a single protagonist. The arrangement gives individual people their own activity while keeping the wider street readable as one lively setting.
