About George Bellows
American · 1882–1925
George Bellows (1882–1925) was an American artist. Bellows's sporting pictures form only one part of a varied career. He also painted portraits, landscapes and scenes of modern urban experience, and developed an extensive practice in lithography. The Studio, Christmas 1916 opens a more intimate register. Its seasonal setting turns attention towards the painter's own surroundings, allowing the viewer to compare the warmth and activity of an interior with the forceful public subjects for which he is often remembered.
