About Fra Bartolommeo
Italian · 1472–1517
Fra Bartolommeo (1472–1517) was an Italian artist. His religious name followed his entry into the Dominican order; his earlier name was Baccio della Porta. Working in Renaissance Florence placed him among artists reconsidering the scale, dignity and organisation of the human figure. His return to painting after joining the order brought those artistic concerns into devotional subjects. The Nativity can be approached through the relationships among its figures, whose direction of attention helps the sacred narrative unfold within a carefully balanced painted space.
