About Cornelis Saftleven
Dutch · 1607–1681
Cornelis Saftleven (1607–1681) was a Dutch artist. Saftleven was born in Gorinchem and spent much of his career in Rotterdam. His subjects ranged from rural scenes and interiors to animals, allegories and fantastic gatherings. That variety makes the supernatural picture part of a wider observational practice. In A Witches' Sabbath, the strange creatures are not vague suggestions: their bodies, limbs and wings receive close attention. The painting's inventions become persuasive through the same descriptive care that could be applied to everyday subjects.
