About Carlo Dolci

Italian · 1616–1687

Carlo Dolci (1616–1687) was an Italian artist. Dolci worked principally in Florence, where his carefully finished religious paintings found an audience among collectors and patrons. Portraiture also formed part of his practice. His precise treatment of surfaces encourages close looking at individual passages of clothing, skin and hair. That attention to finish does not make the larger arrangement incidental: in the selected Nativity scene, darkness and light establish a hierarchy that connects the many small details with the devotional subject at its centre.
