About Carl Larsson
Swedish · 1853–1919
Carl Larsson was born in Sweden in 1853. Work in the international artists’ colony at Grez-sur-Loing, south of Paris, helped develop his watercolour practice. Rural subjects and changing outdoor light offered a setting in which he could explore a clearer, more luminous approach to painting.
Larsson’s work extended across watercolour, illustration and ambitious decorative commissions. His relationship with Karin Larsson belonged to a wider shared interest in art and the spaces of everyday life. Alongside familiar domestic subjects, large public paintings brought his understanding of figures and ornament into a different scale.
