About William Morris
British · 1834–1896
William Morris was born in Walthamstow in 1834. His interests brought together design, literature, historic buildings and the conditions of making. He became a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, arguing for the value of skilled work and thoughtfully designed everyday surroundings.
Morris drew on historical textiles and other decorative arts, bringing their lessons into new designs for wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings. His approach joined careful observation of plants with knowledge of established pattern traditions. Workshops and demanding processes of printing and dyeing were essential to the resulting work.
