About Walter MacEwen

American · 1860–1943

Walter MacEwen (1860–1943) was an American artist. MacEwen was born in Chicago and spent a substantial part of his career working in the Netherlands. He was associated with the artists' colony at Egmond aan Zee. His Dutch subjects reflect that sustained engagement with local settings and social life. The Ghost Story makes storytelling itself the subject, placing the viewer among a group of listeners. The drama depends on changes of expression and posture, supported by the carefully described room in which the tale is heard.
