About Utagawa Hiroshige

Japanese · 1797–1858

Hiroshige lived in Edo, the city now known as Tokyo, during a period when woodblock prints brought pictures to a broad public. Landscape became his great subject. Roads, bridges, rivers and the people moving through them gave him a way to join a recognisable place with a particular moment. His scenes can feel both carefully arranged and unexpectedly immediate.

Hiroshige used the clear contours and coloured areas of woodblock printing to describe atmosphere with remarkable economy. A band of blue can establish the depth of a river. Slanting lines can turn an otherwise ordinary crossing into a sudden shower. The figures remain small, but their gestures help us imagine the conditions around them.
