About Rosa Bonheur
French · 1822–1899
Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899) was a French artist. Bonheur developed an international career through the study and painting of animals. Ploughing in the Nivernais and The Horse Fair became major public works, and her later studio at the Château de By supported sustained work away from Paris. She also made sculpture. The selected animal picture offers a smaller encounter with the same concern for bodily structure and presence, inviting attention to the relationship between the creature's pose, its surface and its surrounding space.
