About Claude Monet

French · 1840–1926

Claude Monet was a central figure in French Impressionism. He explored how light and atmosphere change what we see, often returning to the same subject at different times and in different conditions.

His garden at Giverny became one of his most enduring subjects. The water-lily pond gave him a world of reflections, colour and changing surfaces to paint. In these works, familiar forms begin to dissolve into brushstrokes, inviting a slower kind of looking.
