About Maruyama Ōkyo

Japanese · 1733–1795

Maruyama Ōkyo (1733–1795) was a Japanese artist. Ōkyo established an influential painting school in Kyoto. Close observation of nature formed an important part of his practice, alongside the study of different pictorial traditions. His works could combine convincing natural detail with arrangements suited to large decorative surfaces. Winter Day, painted in 1784, offers that encounter through a screen's expansive field. Trees and terrain occupy a broad space in which empty passages are carefully placed parts of the composition, contributing to its quiet seasonal effect.
