About Keisai Eisen
Japanese · 1790–1848
Keisai Eisen (1790–1848) was a Japanese artist. Eisen worked as an ukiyo-e artist in nineteenth-century Japan and is especially associated with figure designs and portraits of fashionable women. He also produced subjects drawn from nature, as the selected bamboo and sparrows print demonstrates. Its long format concentrates movement into a narrow field. The birds' wings, the bamboo's extended lines and the scattered snow each establish a different rhythm, showing how a small number of subjects can generate a richly varied printed arrangement.
