About Kamisaka Sekka
Japanese · 1866–1942
Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was a Japanese artist. Sekka worked in Kyoto across painting and decorative design, drawing on the Rinpa tradition while responding to new artistic currents. His visit to Glasgow in 1901 brought him into contact with European design, and he later taught in Kyoto. Worlds of Things reflects a practice able to move between pictorial subjects and patterns for designed objects. The selected winter river image makes those concerns visible through simplified colour shapes, carefully placed birds and the flowing line of the water.
