About John Henry Twachtman
American · 1853–1902
John Henry Twachtman (1853–1902) was an American artist. Twachtman was one of the Ten American Painters, formed in 1898, and participated in the development of American Impressionist landscape painting. His approach remained personal, with colour and surface often taking precedence over a crisply described view. Repeated attention to the landscape near his Connecticut home offered a setting for that exploration. Icebound draws the viewer towards the meeting of snow and water, where closely related colours and curving edges make the scene both quiet and active.
