About Jasper Francis Cropsey

Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823–1900) was an American artist. Cropsey trained as an architect before becoming known as a landscape painter associated with the Hudson River School. That career involved a sustained interest in expansive views and the organisation of natural detail. Niagara Falls in Winter offers a subject whose scale is already familiar, yet whose frozen edges require renewed attention. The picture links the broad river and sky with smaller forms of ice, allowing the viewer to move between the whole landscape and its intricate seasonal surfaces.
