About Jacob Cats
Dutch · 1741–1799
Jacob Cats (1741–1799) was a Dutch artist. Cats was born in Altona and worked in Amsterdam as a painter and draughtsman. His career included decorative wall painting before a greater emphasis on drawings. Landscapes, town views and seasonal subjects recur in his work, including series organised around the seasons and times of day. Winter Night in a Dutch Town belongs to that close attention to place and atmosphere, giving the viewer a street whose buildings and small activities remain distinct within a larger nocturnal setting.
