About Isoda Koryusai
Japanese · 1735–1790
Isoda Koryusai (1735–1790) was a Japanese artist. Koryusai worked as a print designer and painter in eighteenth-century Japan. His activity overlapped with the expansion of full-colour woodblock printing and a flourishing market for elegant figure designs. The selected couple beneath an umbrella offers a concentrated encounter with that visual culture. The subject is simple enough to be read immediately, yet the relationship between the two bodies, their patterned clothing and the umbrella's outline gives the composition a more sustained rhythm.
