Hokusai’s wave rises above the boats, with Mount Fuji held quietly in the distance. Strong blue and precise linework make the composition immediately recognisable.

A 12-colour giclée fine art print on 200 gsm smooth matte paper, preserving the full composition within a printed white border. Choose an unframed print or a white, natural or dark wood frame, or a black aluminium frame. About the artwork

Part of Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, this woodblock print sets a towering wave against a distant mountain. The boats beneath the crest give the scene its human scale.

Perspective turns Mount Fuji into a small triangle beneath the wave. Indigo and imported Prussian blue give the print its distinctive colour, while the precise lines hold every curve in balance.

About Katsushika Hokusai

Japanese · 1760–1849

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist working in Edo, now Tokyo. His woodblock prints combine precise linework with bold compositions, turning landscapes into images with remarkable energy and clarity.

His celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji explores the mountain from different viewpoints. Hokusai became particularly known for landscapes in indigo and Prussian blue. In The Great Wave, a dramatic foreground and a distant mountain show how much a change of perspective can transform a scene.
