About Helen Hyde
American · 1868–1919
Helen Hyde (1868–1919) was an American artist. Hyde was an American artist whose career included etching, engraving and colour prints informed by her time in Japan. Women, children and everyday activity became recurring subjects. The selected winter works offer different settings for that interest, moving from outdoor figures beneath umbrellas to a more intimate indoor arrangement. Small gestures hold the people together, while delicate lines and restrained colour make the surrounding weather or symbolic plant forms an active part of each scene.
A Snowy Day: Figures shelter beneath broad umbrellas in a lightly coloured snowy scene. Hyde’s delicate outlines and pale washes give the small group a quiet, intimate presence. Winter: Bundled figures walk together through falling snow beside a dark tree trunk. Hyde uses a few soft colours and flowing lines to express the cold, shared journey.
