About George Gardner Symons
American · 1861–1930
George Gardner Symons (1861–1930) was an American artist. Symons's career linked American landscape painting with time spent among artists in Cornwall. His interest in working outdoors gave changing weather an immediate place in his practice. Winter scenes offered particular challenges: snow changes the apparent shape of the ground, and water interrupts the pale landscape with moving reflections. The selected painting can be approached through those relationships, following the river and then comparing its darker surface with the broad areas of snow on either side.
