About Frits Thaulow
Norwegian · 1847–1906
Frits Thaulow (1847–1906) was a Norwegian artist. Thaulow was a Norwegian painter associated with Impressionism and a close attention to natural landscapes. Water became a particularly important subject in his work, offering a changing surface within an otherwise solid setting. Melting Snow places that concern within the transition between seasons. The river carries reflections through the view, while its banks retain pale patches of snow. The scene rewards following those changes of surface rather than treating every passage as a sharply outlined object.
