About Egon Schiele
Austrian · 1890–1918
Egon Schiele became a leading figure in Viennese modern art during a working life that ended at twenty-eight. Born in 1890, he developed a distinctive approach to the human figure, making drawing central to the force of his images. Faces, hands and the angles of a body became subjects for close attention rather than occasions for conventional elegance.
Schiele’s line can move from delicate description to abrupt emphasis within a small passage. In his portraits, a head or a hand may receive intense attention while surrounding areas remain comparatively spare. That uneven distribution of detail gives the picture a focus, drawing us toward the features that hold its particular character.
