About Childe Hassam
American · 1859–1935
Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was an American artist. Hassam contributed to the establishment of Impressionism in American painting through urban and coastal subjects. He also worked in watercolour, etching and lithography. Across those media, an everyday scene could become an opportunity to study the movement of light and the rhythm of marks. Sweeping Snow turns a domestic task into such a subject. Its steps, broom and repeated surfaces create a structure within which small changes of colour make the weather and activity visible.
