British, born in France · 1839–1899
Alfred Sisley was born in Paris to British parents and remained a British national throughout his life. He trained in Charles Gleyre’s studio, where the circle around Monet and Renoir helped shape his direction. France became his principal home and subject, although journeys to England and Wales brought different rivers, coastlines and skies into his painting.
While fellow Impressionists moved between portraits, interiors and city scenes, Sisley devoted himself chiefly to landscape. Bridges, village streets and the banks of the Seine offered recurring motifs. He returned to places under changing conditions, finding subtle differences in water, cloud and shadow. His paintings combine the immediate sensation of outdoor light with a carefully held sense of structure.
