Bernardo Cavallino (1616–1656) was an Italian artist. Cavallino's surviving work belongs to the rich artistic culture of seventeenth-century Naples. Relatively few paintings carry secure signatures, leaving parts of his career and the boundaries of his work open to study. His religious scenes are often considered through their graceful figures and expressive handling of light. Here the subject creates a gathering of different ages and responses, making the direction of a gaze or the position of a hand an important part of the narrative.
Cavallino worked in Naples. His paintings responded to contemporary innovations with a particularly delicate treatment of figures. In Adoration of the Shepherds, Mary’s attention links the child below with the angels above, while the other figures remain absorbed in the central gathering.
