About Yosa Buson
Japanese · 1716–1783
Yosa Buson (1716–1783) was a Japanese artist. Buson's reputation rests on poetry as well as painting. He worked within the Edo-period culture of literary and pictorial exchange, and his painted landscapes bring small human presences into wider natural settings. The selected Snow Landscape offers a particularly quiet encounter with that practice. Broad pale areas leave room around finely drawn trees and buildings, allowing the viewer's attention to shift between the tangible details and the larger intervals that give the scene its atmosphere.
