About George Inness
American · 1825–1894
George Inness (1825–1894) was an American artist. Inness's early career connected with the Hudson River School, while European painting and the Barbizon artists helped shape his later direction. His mature landscapes are often associated with Tonalism and a growing emphasis on atmosphere. A Winter Sky offers a concentrated encounter with that approach. The painting's warm upper light and cold lower ground are closely connected, making the overall colour relationship more important to the scene's feeling than the isolated description of any one object.
